DR Christian on " What is CBD ?"

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is among the most notable of the approximately 80 active compounds found in Cannabis plants. Its prominence has surged recently due to its potential benefits in health and well-being.

This heightened interest began after the discovery of neurotransmitters and receptors in the central nervous system that either resemble or interact with cannabinoids.

Given that these receptors are found in various cells—including those in the brain, gastrointestinal tract, and certain immune cells—there’s growing excitement about the potential of CBD-like compounds to target these cells for therapeutic benefits.

Importantly, while CBD is derived from marijuana, it’s non-psychoactive and doesn’t produce the euphoria or heightened sensations typically linked to marijuana use.

BRITISH CANNABIS™ Answers Your Questions

What is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is a natural compound derived from both cannabis (often referred to as marijuana) and hemp plants. Today, CBD oil is available in diverse forms, including capsules, vapes, tinctures, edibles, and even cosmetics like bath bombs and lotions. Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t produce any psychoactive effects or a “high.”

What is CBD known for

CBD is celebrated for its ability to promote relaxation, adding to its growing popularity.

A 2017 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry measured the anxiety levels of 57 men before public speaking tasks.

Some participants were given a placebo, while others received varying doses of CBD.

Remarkably, those who took 300 milligrams of CBD showed significantly reduced anxiety compared to the placebo group.

What have studies revealed about CBD’s potential benefits?

  • Epilepsy
The UK’s NHS currently prescribes a cannabis-based medication for rare and hard-to-treat forms of epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
  • PTSD
A 2018 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine involved 11 PTSD patients. Over eight weeks, they were given CBD alongside standard psychiatric therapy. A striking 10 of the 11 participants reported symptom relief.
  • Diabetic Complications
CBD might help counteract the effects of high glucose levels on body cells, potentially delaying the onset of diabetes and related complications.
Further studies have supported CBD’s potential benefits for those with diabetes and related arterial issues.
  • Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory
Research has highlighted CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may protect against various diseases.
  • Arthritis
A 2006 study highlighted the benefits of CBD-based herbal treatments approved in the UK in 2010.
These treatments improved sleep, reduced movement pain, and eased resting pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients, surpassing the placebo’s effects.

However, while some research findings are available, more studies are needed for conclusive evidence.

As the full spectrum of CBD’s benefits remains under exploration, it’s essential to consult a healthcare expert before using it.
